The Magic Lamp

And now for something completely different!

Today is Irina’s birthday. She is my girlfriend/love of my life and I wanted to give her something really special. She is very creative herself and has a keen eye and a great love of beauty. I know that she is particularly fond of Arabic patterns and design so I wanted to incorporate that into the gift somehow. After giving it a lot of thought, I decided to make an art object that was also practical in some way so that she would interact with it and use it on a regular basis. And so, the magic lamp idea was born. I had seen something similar done on a larger scale out of metal and thought it would look cool in a smaller size as well. I made the design, created the box sides and I was ready to go.

A good friend of mine, Kim Holm (artist and professional crazy person) works at a culture house here in Copenhagen and he told me about their fabrication lab – FAB LAB. He helped me get set up with the materials and the laser cutting machine and I was on my way.  It was my very first time attempting anything like this so there was a pretty steep learning curve but I managed to pull it off quite well. Here are some photos I took in my studio of the final result:

Irina absolutely loved it so all the hard work paid off! I think I will continue my adventures into this type of design as it was not only fun but also very different from what I normally do so it challenged me in new ways. And I’m always up for a good challenge 🙂

Let me know what you think
